About Mr. Armstrong

This will be my eleventh year teaching English Language Arts and my third working at Carthage High School, which I graduated from in 2005. I love being back in my hometown helping our sophomores find an appreciation for reading and writing while challenging them to discover and develop the value, depth, and power of their own voices. Hopefully this will be a year of daring greatly and learning bravely.

EDUCATION

"A person's true potential is unknown (and unknowable) ... it's impossible to foresee what can be accomplished with years of passion, toil, and training."

- Carol S. Dweck

DRIVING QUESTIONS:

  1. What do we need to learn if we are going to make a living and a life for ourselves?

  2. How can we best learn these lessons?

  3. What is the difference between schooling and education?

  4. What is the relationship between education and success?

The word "education" derives from the Latin word educere, which means "to lead out." The readings in this unit demonstrate how various educational paths have helped people to do just that - lead out the potential within themselves. As you read, listen closely to what the authors have to say about their own journeys and what they have learned along the way. I hope that this unit will inspire you to contemplate the path you are on as well as the paths you are interested in exploring, however uncharted they might be, so that you can lead out your own potential.

The selections in this unit include essays, memoirs, poems, images, and more. They further illuminate how we expand our education through the journeys, such as college, career, travel, and volunteer services, that most high school students embark on shortly after graduation.

Let the adventure begin.
